Bill Gates’ name is synonymous with technology and philanthropy, but you may not think of him as an author. Well, that’s about to change because he released his third book on February 14, 2021, How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need. (1)

Gates is the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, and he and his wife, Melinda, focus on global health and development through the Gates Foundation. It was through these two areas of work, Gates said in a self-written release about his new book, that he became interested in climate change. (1, 2)

Gates writes that when he started to travel to developing countries in the early 2000s, he noticed that there were fewer lights than he was used to at night. He soon learned that more than one billion people were living without dependable access to electricity. And more than half of the people lacking this access lived in sub-Saharan Africa. (1, 2)

Gates began to ponder the problem of providing reliable, affordable energy to low-income countries. But he knew that this issue was beyond the scope of the Gates Foundation, so he met with experts to discuss it and ask questions. (2)

Bill Gates’ Plan to Stop a Climate Disaster

To avoid a climate disaster, we have to get to zero greenhouse gas emissions.
We need to deploy the tools we already have, like solar and wind, faster and smarter.
And we need to create and roll out breakthrough technologies that can take us the rest of the way.” (1, 2)

Gates is insistent that we must reach zero carbon emissions globally. The book is straightforward about his plan, which he acknowledges won’t be easy. He advocates for completely replacing the use of fossil fuels with nuclear and renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. While these energy sources are currently more expensive, Gates believes that this is because of a “green premium” but that it can be alleviated through further development and government policies.
