We all love our pets. True members of the family, when anything happens we feel it just as worried for them as we do for our human clan. When Sweety the tortoise went missing for seven days, her family was beside themselves. However, the happy ending tells a remarkable story about how the beings we share the planet with seem to also demonstrate an innate sense of home. (1)

Sweety The Russian Tortoise

Sweety’s adoptive mom Sara Coggeshall received her Russian tortoise from her dad 20 years ago. When the tortoise went missing from her Sacramento area home, Sara was desperate to find her. She used social media to get the word out the hunt was on for her beloved tortoise. She finally heard Sweety was found, five miles away. (1)

Apparently Russian tortoises like to escape, but the reason for Sweety’s disappearance is surprising. She traveled five miles from her Roseville home to Orangevale where she lived over a decade ago. (1)

Tortoise Found Five Miles Away

Angela Martin found and rescued Sweety when she spotted the tortoise in her driveway. Angela posted her find on Facebook, unaware she had found Sara’s Sweety. “I couldn’t believe it was hers. She lived all the way in Roseville,” says Angela. (1)

However, this is not the end of the story. When Sara got the call from Angela she couldn’t believe where Sweety was found. “You’re like, ‘this can’t be, this can’t be,’ then you say, ‘wow this really happened.’ My biggest fear she was run over, or attacked, or just gone for good,” says Sara. (1)

Tortoise Finds Old Home

“As soon as I saw the street address, I started crying,” says Sara.  “The fact that my Sweety, my Russian tortoise, walked from the house she lived in for 10 years and went back to the house she used to live in 10 years ago; it’s bizarre.” (1)

Sweety had found her way home, but to the home she remembered a decade ago. Some believe she went to the home looking for an iguana she had befriended when living there. “The iguana would be in one spot [and] she would chase her; the iguana would move she would chase her again. So maybe she misses her,” says Sara. (1)

Tortoise Found Unscathed

The tortoise traveled across busy streets to get to her destination, miraculously arriving unharmed. “She seemed shy, but as soon as Sara picked her up, she was excited, came out of her shell,” says Angela. “It’s incredible. I thought I was just helping someone find their pet, but to think this turtle traveled so far and I was able to reunite the family again, I feel really good.” (1)

Russian tortoises are a popular pet because they remain small and can live for as long as 40 years. They are very content as pets, especially when left to their own devices. (2)

Now home, Sweety is happily at rest having suffered some minor scrapes on her journey. As for why she headed for her old home, we probably will never know.  “I hope she gets enough rest, so she can tell me the story cause I’m curious,” laughs Sara. (1)
