Ah, inflammation. It has become quite the buzzword in recent years, and for good reason. As we learn more and more about what makes our bodies tick, some things have risen to the top of the list of important things to watch out for. If we want to remain healthy for as long as possible, we need to keep inflammation under control.

Inflammation occurs naturally in our bodies, in a variety of ways. An injured joint, or an arthritic one, is inflamed. Foods can cause a lot of inflammation in our bodies. Ever eaten something too spicy, or had an upset tummy? Do you deal with IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome? Then you know all about inflammation. Headaches represent inflammation too, and a hot, red sunburn is inflamed skin.

How do you cool down a sunburn? With something anti-inflammatory, of course. A nice soothing aloe vera gel, or even an ice pack to bring some cooling relief to the heat that your skin is feeling. You wouldn’t go sit in the sun some more… you would take the opposite action. You want to cool it down.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods Combat Inflammation

With the spicy food that upsets your stomach, the answer is not more spicy food. It’s the opposite of that. But utilizing foods for their anti-inflammatory properties is more than just a reactionary measure after you overdo it at Taco Bell. Inflammation is happening in our bodies all the time, in lots of different ways. Sustained inflammation is what we now know causes a vast array of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. By feeding our bodies a well-balanced diet of whole foods that provide a lot of nutrition, we’re likely to maintain a stasis within the body that will give us the longevity we’re looking for. And putting a special eye toward consuming many anti-inflammatory foods, will help your body fight the inflammation that naturally crops up. Give it the fuel it needs to keep a healthy balance and watch your body thrive!

Leafy greens like broccoli, kale, and spinach have all the vitamin K and anti-inflammatory properties you’re looking for, and they are easy to work into almost any meal.
The berries that have that rich dark coloring to them, like blackberries and blueberries, possess strong anti-oxidants known as polyphenols. Our bodies know exactly what to do with these yummy treats, using their anti-inflammatory power to wipe out internal trouble spots.
Salmon is wonderful for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids. This is what doctors believe is responsible for its anti-inflammatory qualities.
Ginger is so powerful, you can almost feel the inflammation leaving your body. Back in 2018, I had oral surgery on a Friday. I drank warm ginger-infused water all weekend long, and on Monday at my checkup, the surgeon couldn’t believe it… she had never seen such little inflammation. She wanted to know my secret and now suggests ginger-infused water to all her patients.
Avocados are full of goodness for your body! Vitamins C, E, and A are all present and accounted for, offering strength for the immune system all wrapped up in delicious, anti-inflammatory, and nutritious monounsaturated fats.
Almonds have more of those same monounsaturated fats that our bodies crave, in a portable package that makes them ultra-snackable.
Black beans are the same color as blackberries because they have those same polyphenols in them. They’re also full of fiber, to help keep you full too.
Pistachios are delicious and they’re great for you too. They can help regulate your blood sugar, which is one marker for good health. Spikes in blood sugar are often indicative of an inflammatory problem. Stable blood sugar suggests that stasis we’re always striving for.
Pomegranate seeds are highly nutritious and worth the effort! Loaded with natural antioxidants they’re like nature’s candy.
Asparagus (and leeks too) have prebiotic fiber which helps maintain proper gut health. Keeping your bacteria levels where they should be, means an all-around happy and inflammation-free tummy.
Egg whites are anti-inflammatory, which is interesting because so many animal products are said to cause inflammation in our bodies. But, just like their color, they are quite neutral in every other way too. This makes them great for those mornings when only a rich and satisfying omelet will do. Stick with the egg whites and enjoy a hearty breakfast that’s anti-inflammatory too.
